Carlos A. Romero-Talamás received his B.S. in Engineering Physics from the Instituto Technológico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey, México in 1995; a Master of Space Studies from the International Space University, Strasbourg, France in 1998; a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering with a minor in Applied Physics from the California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, CA in 2005. He worked as a postdoctoral scholar on the Sustained Spheromak Physics Experiment (SSPX) at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory until 2008. He then joined the University of Maryland’s Institute for Research in Applied Physics as a Research Scientist working on experimental plasma physics, including high-temperature plasma confinement and atmospheric plasmas created by lasers and terahertz breakdown. In 2013, he joined the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) as an Assistant Professor in the department of Mechanical Engineering. He has co-authored more than 25 peer-reviewed journal articles in plasma physics, spectroscopy measurements, and remote detection of radioactive materials.

Research Interests

Dusty plasmas, plasma-materials interactions, magnetic topology changes through magnetic reconnection, magnetic self-organization, and their application to laboratory and astrophysical plasmas, including the burning plasma regime.
