Why did you decide to attend UMBC? And why did you choose your program in particular?
I had completed B.Sc. + M.Sc. (Computer Science), a five-year course in total from the University of Pune. This course was mostly theoretical. After working for almost two years, I felt the need of getting into research and applications. My major project was in web security at the firm where I worked. I also had a strong interest in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning. After some research online, I found UMBC’s Computer Science program a perfect chance to do some research on both Security and Machine Learning. This is what made me choose UMBC and the MS in Computer Science program.
What are some of the benefits of being involved in the graduate community at UMBC?
The great thing about being a part of the graduate community at UMBC is interacting with smart people from all over the world! Everyone here has some unique set of skills and research interests. Therefore I learn something new every single day! Also, I enjoy the fact that there are so many different research areas and activities in the field of Computer Science that we can pursue.
What is your favorite thing about UMBC?
My favorite thing about UMBC is the ability to research, grow, and collaborate with brilliant minds from all over the world! My favorite thing about Baltimore would be Inner Harbor and a convenient location on the East Coast!
Briefly describe your graduate research and its purpose/application.
I am doing research in the area of predicting the prices of agricultural products using Machine Learning algorithms. This is a project which I started to explore during my internship at McCormick & Co. Our final aim is to predict the price of certain crops such as the Black Pepper from the market for coming months.
Have you worked on any specific research projects that you would like to highlight?
I would like to highlight my thesis and research topic of Machine Learning Approach to agricultural price forecasting. It is a project for McCormick & Co. I also did a project with another student at the Malware Research group. We were using machine learning algorithms to predict if a source code on online repositories can be a potential malware or not.
What are your plans after you complete your degree at UMBC?
I plan to work in the areas of Machine Learning, Data Science, Security, or software engineering.
When you are not conducting research, what are your hobbies or interests?
My hobbies are swimming and playing the guitar.
