Why did you decide to attend UMBC? And why did you choose your program in particular?
UMBC is a diverse institution with various programs. I was impressed with Dr. Hrabowski to be honest and the way he leads UMBC. It’s one of the youngest institutions but has shown a ton of potential. I am interested in pursuing a degree which has a blend of management and technology. I was interested in privacy engineering and was impressed with Dr. Aaron Massey’s research. He is my adviser and I am doing research under him.

What is your favorite things about UMBC?
Diversity, events organized and flexibility. Baltimore has many opportunities for start-ups and it is evolving every day.
Briefly describe your graduate research and its purpose/applications.
Quick fix solutions or add-ons to resolve privacy threats aren’t the best approach in the current social media space. Embedding privacy in system design and development efficiently and permanently addresses privacy protection concerns. Though almost everyone uses social media to some extent few feel comfortable using it. Users don’t understand how to manage their privacy. I am working to develop an ontology for gathering and defining privacy requirements for social media data. It becomes confusing to set up privacy preferences for the different categories. There are many approaches of analyzing the unstructured data such as vector space model, natural language processing, taxonomies etc. But these approaches do not provide semantics based representation of documents, do not reflect and use the knowledge. The aim of this ontology would be to structure the unstructured privacy documents and achieve more effective information retrieval. It will be developed in Protégé.

What are your plans after you complete your degree at UMBC?
I have offer of full-time ETL Engineer from Laureate Education, Inc where I am working since June 2017 as Intern. I am planning to work here and start my Ph.D. under Dr. Aaron Massey with same topic.
When you’re not teaching and researching, what are your hobbies and interests?
I like reading about new technology and play Cricket. I usually write blogs if I get time to educate community around me with the topics I am doing research on or know of.
